RARE SNOWFALL HITS PARTS OF SOUTH AFRICA OVER THE WEEKEND
Extreme wintery weather conditions affected a significant part of the South Africa this weekend, with the South African Weather Service issuing a number of weather warnings.
Heavy rains and incidents of flash flooding may affect parts of the Western and Eastern Cape, particularly along the southern and south-eastern coast.
"This extreme, wintery weather is likely to include snowfalls, accompanied by widespread, bitterly cold conditions over many parts of South Africa, with coldness persisting for a four to five-day period in some places," a statement said.
The Western and Eastern Cape, and to a lesser extent the Northern Cape, will be the most adversely affected.
The highveld region of the Free State, North West, Gauteng and Mpumalanga as well as parts of KwaZulu-Natal may experience isolated storms.
The Western Cape snowfall turned the province into a winter wonderland on Friday. Locals have seen flurries settle in for the duration, and the landscape has transformed into something positively Nordic.
We knew that the white stuff was on its way, but until it lands, nothing can be taken for granted. The higher ground across the southern coast became a picturesque location, even if that did mean causing travel chaos for the locals…
