2.1 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE CONFIRMED BY THE IRISH NATIONAL SEISMIC NETWORK IN DONEGAL OVERNIGHT


Overnight Co. Donegal was rocked by a 2.1 magnitude earthquake 9:18pm (21:18hrs) the earthquake occurred over south Donegal close to Ballyshannon Town, Pettigo and Belleek in Co.Fermanagh. The earthquake occurred around the Lough Fad Bog which is located between Laghey and Pettigo along the R232.

A number of people in south Donegal around Cashelard, Ballyshannon, Ballintra and Pettigo have experienced the earthqauke. In Fermanagh the quake has also been felt around Belleek, Toome, Aghnablaney, Kesh and Ederney.

On the 29th April 2019 at 21:18:23 local time (20:18:23 GMT) an earthquake of magnitude 2.1 occurred in Donegal. The location of the epicentre is 54.56N, 7.96W, about 15km south-east from Donegal town and 15km north-east from Ballyshannon, see figure below.  The earthquake was detected automatically by the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) which is operated by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) in co-operation with the Geological Survey Ireland (GSI). The event was recorded on the stations of the Irish National Seismic Network(INSN), see seismic traces below. Some stations from the BGS network in the UK detected the event as well.

Many Locals have reported the earthquake to Donegal Weather Channel and described the Bang as loud as Thunder and a bomb going off. I can confirm that it was not Thunder as there is no thunderstorms in the area and conditions are not right for thunderstorms anywhere across the country.

The event was recorded on the stations of the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) . Data below shows the the earthquake which which was recorded at the Donegal Seismograms station.

Donegel Seismograms station recorded the latest earthquake tonight.

This is the second earthquake in the last month to hit Donegal with the last earthquake recorded in Donegal Bay on the night of the 7th of April. This earth quake would of been felt by more people as it was on land.
