OUTLOOK

On Christmas eve high pressure moves over Ireland bring a much needed break from all the wet and windy weather so far in December and the good news is that it looks as it will stay in place at least up until the weekend bring much dry weather. There will be risk cooler conditions next week but noting severe. The weather over the Christmas period will not have any effect on it but heading into the new year and January i would advise people to prepare for much colder weather as there is signals and high chance of snow and cold temperatures in the forecast as anticipated changes in the upper atmosphere over the North Pole during late December stage may impact the polar vortex due to a strong sudden stratospheric warming which looks as it will occur in the next week to 10 days and when this happens it increases the changes of colder weather and zonal winds. As the polar vortex becomes distorted, the jet stream tends to buckle with large southward dips and northward bulges. Sudden stratospheric warming also occurred at the start if February in 2017 which lead to that much colder spell near the end of the month (the beast from the east).

It can some time take up to 10 days or more for the impacts of the (SSW) to effect us and will be one which will need to be watched rather closely
