Cold weather is now established itself across Ireland with a big change to the system and as mentioned over last week there would be days when snow looked possible due to areas of low pressure moving across the country mixing with colder air across Ireland.

Tuesday night with colder air placed over Ireland an area of low pressure will move in of the Atlantic from the west crossing moving eastwards on Wednesday morning. As the area of low pressure moves west to east it will bring a spell of rain which will turn to snow across some parts of inland Connacht, Leinster and possibly south Ulster with some snow accumulations on lower ground areas. Tuesday night and Wednesday morning will be cold with lows of -3C to +2C coldest across the west, north and east. Snow and ice warnings are likely to be issued on Tuesday when there is a better understanding of the track.

Some parts of Ulster will stay dry as the area of low pressure move across Wednesday morning with precipitation across the south and southwest falling as sleet and rain due to upper air and ground level air temperature not been low enough with snow over the mountains. Higher ground areas across Ireland on Wednesday will become very hazardous and should be avoided. Some showers will also occur across north Connacht and north Ulster on Wednesday falling as hail, sleet and snow. These sea streamers may giving some small accumulations along some coastal areas.

As we move into the end of the week and over this weekend it will turn colder with sharp to severe frost night time frosts and lows on some nights of -4C in places with icy stretches. There are also signals that a more easterly airflow and a strong blocking pattern will develop in the Atlantic giving the risk of some even more colder. There will also be a further risk of wintry showers and possible areas of low pressure crossing over Ireland bringing the risk of snow to places as rain is turned to snow as it hits the cold air.
