KEEP WATCH FOR PURPLE SKY'S AFTER SUNSET THIS EVENING

Last night some people may have noticed that there was a purple tinge after Sunset yesterday evening in the sky and the reason for this is due to a increase amounts of sulphur dioxide into the the atmosphere.

In fact this is something that has happened over over much of Europe this week.

The reason for the increase amounts sulphur dioxide in the Stratosphere which is layer in Earths atmosphere is due to Volcanic eruptions on Raikoke Volcano on the Kirul Islands which is located in the Sea of Okhotsk in the northwest Pacific Ocean.

Raikoke Volcano erupted on approximately 4 am, 22 June 2019 with a plume of ash and gas reaching between 13,000 m (43,000 ft) and 17,000 m (56,000 ft), passing the tropopause and allowing stratospheric injection of ash and sulfur dioxide.

the volcano Raikoke spewed sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, which led to the creation of tiny particles called aerosols. The aerosols scatter sunlight, resulting in more purples at sunrise and sunset.

It makes you realize that you don't have to put a whole lot of aerosols into the stratosphere to change its composition. This was a relatively small volcanic eruption, but it was enough to impact most of the Northern Hemisphere.

With high pressure in place over Ireland this week it means that there is good clear sky and sunshine leading to very nice Sunsets and Sunrises and with the clear sky’s this can be seen just after sunset when you may even notice some rays after sunset and that purple and pink colour.

Keep a eye out over the coming evenings to see if you can see this and send your photos on to Donegal Weather Channel.
