Parts of the west, northwest and north set for snowfall on Thursday morning

The rest of this week will remain cold across Ireland with frost and icy patches up until at least Saturday with a more westerly flow and Atlantic pattern looking set to return across Ireland at the end of this weekend. Temperatures will recover back to average early next week with nights less cold and a small risk of frost in places.

Wednesday will be a rather cold day with frost and ice not clearing parts of the west, northwest and north with some patches of freezing fog also in places keeping temperatures near 0C in some places. Icy roads and hazardous driving conditions will persist on untreated roads on Wednesday ahead of a spell of rain moving into the northwest overnight.

Overnight a spell of rain will move into the northwest and extend southeastwards overnight but as it extends down over Ireland it will tend to die out as it gets into Munster and Leinster.

Many of the forecasting models show this rain turning to snow across inland areas of Connacht and Ulster with some accumulations of snow at first across parts of Donegal later Wednesday night and then over Much of Ulster and inland areas of Connacht.

At present the highest risk areas of seen this snowfall and accumulations on Thursday Morning will be Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Eastern parts of Mayo, Eastern parts of Galway, Longford, Derry, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Cavan & Monaghan. Accumulations are most likely in parts of these counties,

Across the rest of Ulster and parts of Leinster some small isolated snow flurries and accumulations could occur but the band of snow will have started to fizzle out before reaching those areas.

Snow and Ice warnings will be issued on Wednesday Morning mostly likely for western, northwestern and northern counites pending no changes.
