Turning much colder at the end of this week with the first snowfall over higher ground areas

The highest risk areas will be western, northwestern and northern parts on Wednesday night and Thursday with some coverings of snow over the mountains across Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo, Fermanagh, Antrim ,Tyrone and Derry.

Lower level areas will tend to see more of a mix of Rain, Sleet and hail with the chances of snow much lower. Some upland areas along with higher elevation roads like Barnesmore gap , Drumkeen and Meenaroy in Donegal along with the Glenshane pass in Derry for a example could see temporary accumulations leading to slushy and icy roads.

Thursday night will be the coldest of the nights across Ireland with temperatures across Ulster and Leinster dropping to -4C to -1C and across Connacht and Munster -2C to +1C. Icy conditions will form on road and footpath surface leading to dangerous conditions. Caution is advised from Thursday morning right into Friday morning. Air temperatures chart attached below for Thursday night into Friday morning

The below image shows the freezing level across Ireland on Thursday morning which is around 300 meters to 400 meters. The freezing level shows where the greatest chance of snowfall will be at and at present that looks set to be on the higher ground areas.

TUESDAY 1ST DECEMBER 2020

Cloudy and mostly dry on Tuesday across Ireland with some brighter spells possible across the southwest, some patches of drizzle could occur in places especially along western and northwestern counties. Temperatures will range between 7C to 11C warmest across the southwest and west.

Cloudy on Tuesday night with showers moving into the northwest pushing southeastwards across Ireland. Temperatures between 4C to 7C.

WEDNESDAY 2ND DECMEBER 2020

Rain clearing to the southeast on Wednesday morning with bright and sunny weather developing across Ireland but some showers still across the northwest. During the afternoon and evening it will turn much colder with a polar maritime airmass moving across Ireland with showers moving into the northwest pushing southeast across Ireland. Temperatures will range between 5C to 8C.

Showers moving northwest to southeast across Ireland Wednesday night with some turning thundery and wintry with some rain, sleet and hail to lower level and snow possibly across higher ground areas of the west, northwest and north. Turning colder again on Wednesday night with low of 0C to 5C with the risk of some icy roads across the north and northwest.

THURSDAY 3RD DECMEBER 2020

Showers across the west, northwest and north will turn much more wintry on Thursday morning with some snow over the higher ground areas with some covering in parts. Shower across lower levels will fall as hail, sleet and rain with some temporary hail coverings in any heavier showers that could also turn thundery. Southern and eastern areas will remain mostly dry with bright and sunny spells. Thursday will be noticeably colder with temperatures between 2C to 5C coldest in the northern half of Ireland.

Further wintry showers of rain, sleet and hail across low level areas with some snow over higher ground areas across western and northwestern coastal counites on Thursday night but drier elsewhere. It will turn very cold overnight with temperatures dropping below freezing for many areas leading to icy conditions with slippery roads. Temperatures will range between -4C to 0C with a sharp frost across the east and north with temperatures across the west and south between -2C to +1C

FRIDAY 4TH DECMEBER 2020

Frost and ice clearing on Friday morning but it will remain cold with some further showers along western and northwestern counites some which could be wintry with the risk of thunderstorms. some further showers will move into the northern half of Ireland over the afternoon moving southwards during the evening with the risk of some wintry falls in places.

Friday night will be less cold but there will be further showers in places some of these wintry over higher ground areas with some hail showers to lower levels. Temperatures will range between 0C to 5C.

SATURDAY 5TH DECMEBER 2020

Some further showers on Saturday theses heaviest across the northwest and north with the risk of hail and thunderstorms, southern and eastern areas will be much drier with bright and sunny spells. Temperatures will range between 3C to 6C

OUTLOOK

Sunday looks set to be dry for many areas but some showers will occur across eastern, northern and northwestern coastal counites.
