Irish weather News

This weekend will be rather humid across Ireland with temperatures in the high teens to low 20s. Over the weekend a much more unstable airmass will sit across the county which would be the perfect ingredients for heavy showers and thunderstorms to form. Some the weather this weekend may have some severe aspects to it with frequent lightning in places for a time and the risk of localised flooding.

Starting of with Saturday the risk of showers will be rather widespread later in the morning and over the afternoon and evening. Saturday morning will see some scattered showers and drizzle in places but some brighter conditions will develop through the later morning. During the early afternoon heavy convective showers will form across Munster and south Leinster, these showers will move slowly northwards during the afternoon and evening reaching Connacht, the rest of Leinster and south Ulster. Donegal Weather Channel currently has a early status yellow thunderstorm warning in place for Donegal, Fermanagh, Cavan, Connacht, Leinster & Munster from 10am Saturday morning to 10pm Saturday night, Met Éireann are likely to issue warnings closer to the time at some stage later tomorrow as they tend to issue thunderstorm warnings up to a few hours before or when thunderstorms start to kick of. There is a potential for a status orange thunderstorm warning for places on Saturday due to the widespread risk with the rest of Ulster also possibly coming under some sort of warning tomorrow but this is uncertain and is why Donegal Weather Channel has not included it into its warning for now.

FLOODING AND HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS THIS WEEKEND

If you are in a area prone to flooding it is important to keep in touch with the forecast and latest warnings this weekend especially due to the localised nature of these thunderstorms which can mean even with you under a warning it doesn't mean you will see these sort of conditions but a few kilometers away could see all these sort of conditions. This weekend due to the slow movement of these heavy thundery showers it leads to a higher risk of localised and flash flooding as thunderstorms sit over a area for a longer period dumping more rain. Rivers and steams will become swollen very quickly under these conditions with run of rainfall from mountains also adding to the risk of flooding in lowland areas. Some areas could see a much as 20mm to 40mm in the space of a 2 hour period and just to put that into perspective thats over a weeks worth of rain for parts of Ireland for this time of year.

Donegal Weather Channel will be monitoring the forecast situation over the weekend and may issue some flash warnings for places as we track these storms on Saturday and Sunday.
