After a cold start to the week and the first real cold snap of winter 2018/2019 it will turn milder over the end of this week with temperatures around normal or just above for January. Temperatures on average will be between 6C to 10C this Thursday and Friday.

On Friday night and Saturday morning a area of low pressure will move in from the Atlantic bringing with it a band of rain which will past over the county leading to heavy  rain everywhere early Saturday morning. As the area of rain clears to the east on early Saturday afternoon. late Saturday afternoon and over the evening it will become colder again as another area of colder air move across Ireland with further showers of rain and hail these heaviest across the southwest, west and northwest.

Showers will continue over night these heaviest across Ulster, North Connacht and east Leinster where there will be the risk of rain, hail and some sleet over the hills.

On Sunday morning there will be the risk of some icy road conditions as temperatures drop to around 0C to -1C with highs of around 3C to 4C. winds will switch from a northwesterly to northerly with further showers possible turning to sleet and snow across Ulster and North Connacht with accumulations possible over the higher ground areas and northern hills.

Sunday will be a cold day with nice winter sunshine for most but further wintry showers of hail sleet and snow will be possible over the day across parts of Ulster mostly but some parts of Connacht too with day time temperatures only between 3C to 6C.

There still is some uncertainly about Monday and Tuesday and this should become clearer by Friday but it does show a similar set up as we seen Monday night into Tuesday with a colder air mass or polar maritime air sinking in again leading to further wintry falls across Ulster, North Connacht and northern Leinster with some snow accumulations possible especially across the north and northwest of Ireland.

Upper air temperatures at 850hPa for the start of next week show the risk of colder air again and cold enough for wintry falls.

Upper air temperatures at 850hPa for the start of next week show the risk of colder air again and cold enough for wintry falls.

There is a lot of uncertainty after Tuesday with some models suggesting it will stay cold and others going for another milder brief spell of weather. I would go with the ECMWF model as it is the best model and runs at a higher resolution than the rest of the models which shows the milder solution again after Wednesday.

That it for this update folks, I will update again when more information is available and a clearer outlook can be giving.
