The famous Donegal postman Michael Gallagher has shared his weather prediction for winter 2020 - and says we could be in for a white Christmas.

Michael, who forecasts the weather based on traditional methods passed down from the older generation, spoke to RSVP Live and said that we are in for a "very, very cold winter" with storms and snow.

As for whether the snow will hit on Christmas Day, he said: "That's just one day, it's hard to be that exact about it.

He added that there will be an East Wind, which is never a good sign.

"Any wind that you get from the east, that's a unhealthy wind and it brings a lot of flus and colds," he went on.

"It's a time when people should keep warm."

"I go out to the mountains with the dog and look around me and there are some things I’d be looking out for," he said.

"I like to keep the old traditions alive.

"The older generation would always use these methods, they relied on them."

He said that he fears this winter will be a lonely one for many people, and suggested an idea to help those living on their own.

"I'd love to see some sort of community initiative where we organise for elderly people or people living on their own to be given a dog to keep them company," he said.

"Dogs are great company and they are great protection too!"

At present looking ahead using science to forecast the latest outlook is for unsettled weather again next week with rain and possible windy weather again with temperatures on the mild side and a above average for the time of year. There is currently no signs of any cold snaps in the forecast.
