Falls of snow over the weekend likely as cold Polar Maritime air reaches Ireland

From Friday on it will turn much colder across Ireland with falls of sleet and snow to both lower levels and higher levels.

Cold upper air temperatures and sea level ground temperatures will mean precipitation is likely to turn wintry in places this weekend.

The risk of wintry falls of snow will continue from Saturday morning into Monday.

Friday night will see blustery showers turning wintry after midnight across coastal counties of west Ulster and west Connacht and possibly over western parts of Munster also.

Around dawn Saturday morning there could be snow on the ground over higher parts of the Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo and Galway including places like Drumkeen, Barnesmore gap, Meenaroy and around the roads of Errigal.

Later in the morning there will be the risk of further showers these falling as snow on some lower level areas also with accumulations possible across Donegal, Derry, Tyrone Fermanagh, Antrim, North Sligo, North Mayo and Leitirm.

Saturday morning will start of with icy conditions especially across the north and west of Ireland so beware when traveling over the morning. Temperatures will be as low as -1C to 3C.

Saturday afternoon models show a weather system moving across the south of Ireland with this precipitation moving into the colder air there is a risk it could cause some disruption on Saturday afternoon and evening for Munster, Leinster and south Connacht with snow Accumulations somewhere in the region of 5cm to 7cm in places. Here at Donegal Weather Channel we have been keeping a eye on this the last day with the ecmwf model and GFS showing this.

Moving into Saturday night and into Sunday morning the GFS and ECMWF model shows the risk of further wintry falls of snow with accumulations across the west and northwest of Ireland and possibly over some northern parts to as heavy showers merge into longer spells of sleet and snow. Colder on Saturday night with temperatures falling as low as -4C to 2C. Frost and very icy conditions will cause problems overnight and over Sunday morning.

Sunday will see further wintry showers of sleet and snow and some rain to in places. There will also be some good sunny spells but the day will be rather cold 3C to 7C.

Turning rather cold on Sunday night again with temperatures as low as -2C to 4C with frost and icy roads.

Monday will see the risk of further wintry falls of hail, sleet and snow with temperatures again on Monday night below freezing with frost and icy roads.
