The new week will start of with bright and sunny spells on Monday with a nice day across Ireland, Over a the evening cloud will then increase from the southwest and west with a big change in weather conditions come midnight with a area of low pressure of the west of Ireland feeding in very wet and windy weather with some areas also at a very high risk of flooding.

HEAVY RAINFALL

On Monday evening a area of low pressure of the west of Ireland centered over the ocean will feed in cloud quickly across the country over Monday evening and night with a band of rain spreading from the southwest and west . The image below shows this band of rain moving into southwestern and western parts early Monday night

Rain across the southwest and west early Monday night

After midnight the band of rain will then spread eastwards across Ireland with very heavy falls in places on Tuesday morning with the risk of flooding increasing the more we move through Tuesday

Heavy rainfall will continue across many parts of the south and east until Wednesday evening and night with large amounts of rainfall accumulating. The animation below shows the heavy rainfall From Monday night until Wednesday night

SEVERE FLOODING RISK

There is a risk that some very disruptive and damaging flooding that could occur in places between Monday night and Wednesday evening/night with some areas set to see some large amounts of rainfall. Met Eireann currently have a yellow weather warning for rainfall in place for southern and western counites of Ireland but some parts of the southwest of Ireland may see this warning upgraded to a orange level warning due to the amounts that currently are forecast to fall in particular across areas like Cork and Kerry with totals of 40 to 80mm with the risk of higher amounts in mountainous regions where up to 100mm of rainfall will be possible leading to extremely dangerous/destructive flooding.

Some other parts may also be added to the yellow level warning on Monday possibly some northern and eastern counites.

The below chart show the amount of rainfall expected showing in (mm) with some parts receiving 70mm+ especially high ground areas.

Accumulated rainfall expected by Wednesday 9pm

COASTAL FLOODING

Another risk of flooding will come in the way of coastal flooding due to the high winds and big swells at sea. Anywhere winds are onshore on Tuesday will see the risk of flooding around coastal areas with southern and western counites most at risk. Some big swells and waves area also expected into Wednesday so some coastal flooding will also be possible until then.

STRONG WINDS

On Monday night a developing low pressure system looks set to move northwards up of the west of Ireland but this low pressure system has a large wind field and will bring strong winds to all areas overnight Monday and on Tuesday morning with some parts of the southwest, west and northwest potentially seen severe and damaging gusts this has the potential to be a named wind and rainfall storm. Some gusts of 130km/hr will be possible across Atlantic coastal areas with winds elsewhere gusting between 80km/hr to 110km/hr.

Again warnings have only been issued for wind for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Munster, Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo but I expect this to be updated again on Monday morning with all of Ireland under a status yellow wind warning and as mentioned above maybe even a orange warning for some coastal counites of the southwest, west and northwest.
