The weather of late has been rather unsettled across Donegal with one of the coldest starts to May in over 40 years with temperatures at the start of to month below 0C with frost in places. Over the month Donegal and Ireland has remained under a rather unsettled pattern with the Atlantic dominating but the current signal is for higher pressure to build next week across Donegal and Ireland with the chance at around 80% which is very high in the weather world

THURSDAY

Thursday will be a very wet day across Donegal as an area of low pressure moves in from the Atlantic on Wednesday night crossing over Ireland during the next 36 hours. Rainfall amounts of between 10mm to 20mm are forecast across Donegal on Thursday into Friday morning.

The good news is that the strong winds which will come with this low pressure system will not effect Donegal with Cork, Kerry, Waterford and Wexford seen the worst of these.

FRIDAY

Friday will be a rather cloudy and showery day across Donegal but the good news is the rain will be less heavy. During the evening showers will fizzle out with some bright and sunny spells to end the evening in parts of Donegal. Temperatures will range between 11C to 12C.

WEEKEND

Saturday

Saturday will be the best day of the weekend across Donegal with a few isolated showers around but good bright and sunny spells also so not a bad day overall if you are planning a outdoors trip. The day will be rather cool for may across Donegal with temperatures between 9C to 10C.

Sunday

Sunday morning a low pressure system will move towards Ireland with a band of rain moving into the west after Saturday midnight into Sunday morning sweeping eastwards across Donegal clearing during the afternoon. During the afternoon and evening some drier conditions will develop across Donegal but there will also be the potential for a few thunderstorms to develop over the afternoon and evening due to a unstable airmass over Donegal and Ireland. Diurnal heating from the sun would also help the development of heavy showers and thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening Temperatures will range between 10C to 12C.

Monday

As the area of low pressure swirls around and clears to the east over the UK it will bring another spell of rain on Monday morning down across Donegal, The rain will clear to the south around midday with brighter and sunny spells following over the afternoon and evening but there will be still the chance of a isolated shower.

Tuesday

Tuesday may see a few isolated showers across Donegal but overall a lot of dry weather with some good bright and sunny spells.

From next Wednesday we then start to see higher pressure building across Ireland and the UK and by the end of next week and over next weekend the jest stream becomes more amplified and move northwards well north of Ireland and the UK. With the Jet stream moving to the north of us that also would mean a high chance of warmer weather especially with us sitting on the warmer side of the jet.

There are some signs that it will becoming warmer by the end of next week and over next weekend with temperatures into the high teens to low 20s. Tonight’s GFS model also is going for even warmer temperatures into the first week of June with temperatures possibly into the mid 20s but this is along way off yet to nail down.
