Its been the most thundery May across Ireland & the UK in over 10 years
May 2021 has been one of the most thundery May in over 10 years across Ireland and the UK.
Spring started of rather quiet with very little in the way of thunderstorm but come the Month of may that changed with Thunderstorms.
Data form Convective weather who are based in the UK confirmed this. (Explained below)
Convective weather had this to say
“After a very quiet start to spring, May has certainly been an active month for thunderstorm activity in the UK and Ireland. For the year-to-date, 2021 ranks as the 3rd most active year of the past 12 - but for just the month of May we’ve already exceeded 2014 to make it the most thundery May since before 2010 (when this record starts)”
“How do we calculate this? Essentially we calculate how much of the UK-Ireland land area is covered in lightning (using a 10km radius from a given point) on each day of the year as a percentage, and then accumulate these values through the year. The values you then see are the areal-average 'days of thunder' for the UK-Ireland as a whole.”
