ROADS UPDATE - Further wintry showers with icy conditions and a sharp to severe frost overnight

A very cold night is ahead and probably the coldest night since the first of 2020 with the risk of a sharp to severe frost for many parts of Ireland with very icy conditions expected.

Road conditions are expected to worsen as the night goes on and ground and air temperatures drop allowing icy stretches to form nationwide.

The northwest, north and west in particular extra caution is advised tonight and Friday morning with further showers expected overnight some which will fall as hail, sleet and snow with some rain also regardless once these showers pass by clear spell will develop with wet road and ice forming.

Gritters are out nationwide tonight and again on Friday morning.

Below attached you will find the current air temperatures across Ireland with -1C the lowest so far at Castlederg, Tyrone and Gurteen, Tipperary.

Road temperatures are also currently as low as -2C on some roads looking at the latest NRA road data temperatures which means ice will be forming leading to dangerous driving conditions

  • With the freezing temperatures expected tonight please travel with care.

  • Black ice may form on some roads and is very hard to see

  • A yellow snow and ice warning remains in places for for Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Leitrim valid until 7am tomorrow (4th).  A similar warning is in place for counties Antrim, Tyrone and Derry until 10am tomorrow

  • Wintry showers can affect visibility and mean a sudden change to road conditions. Slow down if driving in the area and allow yourself more room to brake, as it can take up to ten times longer to stop a vehicle on icy roads. 

  • Allow extra time in the morning to fully de-ice your vehicle before setting out.

Further wintry showers of rain, sleet and hail across low level areas with some snow over higher ground areas across western and northwestern coastal counites on Thursday night but drier elsewhere. It will turn very cold overnight with temperatures dropping below freezing for many areas leading to icy conditions with slippery roads. Temperatures will range between -4C to 0C with a sharp frost across the east and north with temperatures across the west and south between -2C to +1C

FRIDAY 4TH DECMEBER 2020

Frost and ice clearing on Friday morning but it will remain cold with some further showers along western and northwestern counites some which could be wintry During the later morning another spell of rain will move into the northeast and spread southwards across Ireland during the the afternoon, This rain may start as sleet or wet snow across Ulster and parts of Leinster espically over higher ground areas and some low ground areas for a time before turning back to rain. Becoming very windy on Friday with strong north to northwest winds with a Yellow wind warning in affect for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford, there will be the small risk of coastal flooding.

Friday night will be cold especially with the Windchill factor with strong north to northwesterly winds but there will be further showers in places some of these wintry over higher ground areas of Ulster and Leinster with some hail showers to lower levels across the west and south it will ne. Temperatures will range between 0C to 5C.

SATURDAY 5TH DECMEBER 2020

Some showers to start on Saturday morning across the west and northwest but all areas will becoming mostly dry during the afternoon and evening . Temperatures will range between 3C to 6C.

Turning cold again on Saturday night with sharp frost forming in most places with low of -2C to +1C , some mist and fog patches also

SUNDAY 6TH DECMEBER 2020

Dry again for much of Ireland on Sunday after morning fog and frost clear to give bright and sunny spells most areas. Temperatures of 3C to 6C.

Becoming cloudier in the west and south during the evening and night with some rain there some which could turn wintry over higher ground areas. Further north across Ulster and north Leinster there will be some clear spells with frost there. Temperatures of 0C to 4C
