This weekend is looking very unsettled across Ireland with 3 areas of low pressure looking set to hit between Friday night and Monday. A weather advisory was issued this morning and a early status yellow wind warning has been issued for Ireland for Saturday.

Latest data from the ECMWF model has the storm developing of the southwest coast of Ireland and passing close to the west and northwest coast on Saturday and with low air pressure, high swells, spring tides and strong to severe southwest to westerly winds this will lead to the risk of coastal flooding.

Friday and Saturdays area of low pressure looks as it will be named Storm Aidan with a orange wind warning possibly been issued as early as Friday for winds of 110km/hr to 125km/hr with the strongest of the winds likely in southern, western and northwestern areas, particularly near coasts on Saturday morning and afternoon..

At present there then look set to be a slight ease in winds later Saturday evening and early night before another area of low pressure moves of the west and northwest of Ireland again later Saturday night and Sunday morning this also could be a another named storm but details on this area of low pressure are yet more uncertain.

Further stormy weather then looks possible again in places on Sunday night into Monday

Hazards this weekend:

Spells of heavy rain will lead to surface and river flooding. All soils are saturated across the country at present, so additional rainfall will quickly run-off into rivers. The heaviest and most persistent of the rain is likely in the south and west of the country.

Very windy/stormy at times with some severe and damaging gusts possible. The strongest of the winds are likely in southern, western and northwestern areas, particularly near coasts.

Some coastal flooding possible also as we have very high seas at the moment, combining with surge, high tides and onshore winds over the weekend. Areas most at risk, again in the south, west and northwest.

The heaviest of the rainfall from these depressions will be during night-time hours, Friday night into Saturday, Saturday night into Sunday and Sunday night into Monday.

The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency management hosted a briefing by Met Eireann this afternoon and advised that warnings may be issued for potentially stormy conditions and a storm may be named. However there is a lot of uncertainty still regarding the extent, timing and affected regions with several deepening lows tracking across or close to the country between Saturday and Monday or Tuesday.

The next Storm name will be called Aiden and will be the first named storm of the season.
