Snow and icy conditions for Ireland for Sunday and next week

WEATHER ADVISORY FOR IRELAND FOR POSSIBLE ICY CONDITIONS AND SNOW ACCUMULATIONS

On Sunday the 26th of January 2020 a colder plunge of polar maritime air moving down from Northern Canada and Greenland will move over Ireland and stay with us for the start of next week with the risk of colder weather.

A Polar Maritime air mass comes from the region northern Canada and Greenland. The wind direction normally associated Polar Maritime is a north-westerly wind.

In winter this air mass will lead to a mixture of rain, hail, thunder and even snow over some western and north parts, Showers in this airflow is are fairly frequent. Showers would be less across the eastern half of Ireland and the UK.

Temperatures

Sea level temperatures will range between 2C to 7C by day but during any shower activity temperatures could drop between 1C to 2C during the day. Night time temperatures will range between -3C to 3C on Sunday night, Monday night and Tuesday night.

Precipitation

Some shower of rain, hail, sleet and snow will occur in places mainly across the west, northwest and north of Ireland where the will be heaviest. Any snowfall will mainly occur over the dark hours so from late evening, night and early morning hours.

Snow accumulations

Snow accumulations will also occur in places with the highest risk of snow accumulations across the west, northwest and north of Ireland and possibly some southwestern areas of Ireland also. Snow will be more common over higher ground areas and mountains with some accumulations of up to 10cm from Sunday night into Tuesday night but some accumulations also look likely to occur across lowland areas during dark hours when temperatures drop low enough giving some hazardous driving conditions.

Icy roads

Icy road conditions will also be possible over Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with rain, hail and sleet showers leading to ice forming on road surfaces especially over the upland areas.

Windchill

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday will also see a very cold wind chill factor of between -1C to -7C coldest at night.

Thunder & Lightning

Some showers will also be thundery on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday mainly across the west and north of Ireland with some thunderstorm activity.

Forecast

Sunday evening/night - Showers will move in from the Atlantic on Sunday night and turn heavy merging in to longer spells of hail, sleet and snow giving accumulations across the west, northwest, north and possibly across some parts of the midlands. Showers elsewhere will fall mainly as hail and sleet as that band of precipitation clears through on Sunday night of to the east.

Monday - Once the spell of hail, Sleet and snow clears through on Sunday night drier weather and some clear spells will follow from the west early Monday morning with temperatures below freezing in some areas with the risk of icy roads. Further wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow will occur mainly across the west and northwest of Ireland with some thundery episodes also.

Monday afternoon will see further wintry showers with the risk of thunder these mainly across the west and northwest of Ireland where some snow accumulations will be possible with some hazardous driving conditions.

Further wintry showers on Monday night with a increasing chance of snow to lower levels and very icy roads.

Tuesday

Further wintry showers on Tuesday morning with these heaviest across the west, northwest and north of Ireland, Tuesday afternoon, evening and night will see the risk of further wintry showers but these may be more confined to higher ground areas.

Wednesday

Some uncertainty yet but it look as it may become milder again on Wednesday with a rise of temperatures.

WEATHER WARNINGS

Weather warnings are likely to be issued for snow and icy as early as Saturday evening or night with a possible nationwide yellow warning.
