Status Orange wind warning issued for Donegal for strong wind gusts of 120km/hr

A number of Weather warnings have been issued for parts of Ireland for Wednesday and Thursday.

Met Eireann have issued a Status Orange wind warning for Donegal in the last hour and a Status yellow wind warning for Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Louth, Meath, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo and Clare.

A status Yellow snow and ice warning is also in place for Donegal, Tyrone, Derry, Fermanagh, Antirm, Down and Armagh for this afternoon lasting into Thursday morning and this warning could also include other counties later today with a possible updated warning issued.

Showers this afternoon and evening will move in from the Atlantic pushing west to east across Ireland with these showers merging into longer spells of rain and hail at first but turning to sleet over some parts this afternoon across western, northwestern and northern counties with snow over higher ground and the mountains.

Overnight these showers of rain, hail and sleet will turning increasingly to snow over Ulster and parts of Connacht particularly west Ulster and north Connacht across the counties of Donegal, Derry, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Leitrim and Sligo with some temporary accumulations of hail or snow possible in places on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Temperatures overnight will range between -1C to 3C with the risk of ice and frost forming leading to icy roads and hazardous driving conditions in places.

The Status Yellow snow and ice warning in place for Donegal, Tyrone, Derry, Fermanagh, Antirm, Down and Armagh will remain in places until 8am Thursday morning.

A area of low pressure will move of the northwest of Ireland on Thursday morning and is the reason a Status Orange and Yellow wind warning has been issued for places.

Across Donegal winds will be strongest with southwest winds veering west to northwest gusting as high as 120k/hr with mean wind speeds of 60 to 75km/hr

Due to a combination of waves, spring tides and surge, the possibility of coastal flooding is increased on Thursday.

The Status orange warning for Donegal will be in place from 08:00 Thursday 12/03/2020 to 12:00 Thursday 12/03/2020

A status Yellow wind warning has also been issued for Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Louth, Meath, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo and Clare for Southwest winds veering west to northwest.

Due to a combination of waves, spring tides and surge, the possibility of coastal flooding is increased along western and northwestern coasts on Thursday.

The Status yellow wind warning will be in place from 04:00 Thursday 12/03/2020 to 18:00 Thursday 12/03/2020

Status Orange and Yellow Marine warnings have also been issued

Status Orange - Gale Warning

1. Southwest winds veering northwesterly will reach gale force 8 to strong gale force 9 tonight and on Thursday on Irish coastal waters from Valentia to Rossan Point to Belfast Lough, occasionally reaching storm force 10 on Thursday morning from Loop Head to Rossan Point to Fair Head.

2. Southwest winds veering west will reach gale force 8 on Irish coastal waters on Thursday from Fair Head to Carnsore Point to Valentia.

Status Yellow - Small Craft Warning

Southwest winds will reach force 6 or higher on all Irish Coasts today.
