A number of farm yards and roads in the Golden Island area of Athlone in Co Westmeath have been flooded.
Farmers in the area and residents on the Strand in the town have put additional flood barriers in place as preventative measures.
There is growing concern in the area over the effects of prolonged rainfall in the last 24 hours and Westmeath County Council has put additional staff on standby.
The council said that water levels on the River Shannon are around 1m below the highest level recorded during the winter of 2015-16.
It said that permanent flood defences already in place "will provide significant protection to areas of the town that were affected in the past."
