Colder air across Ireland midweek

In what has been a very wet and mild start to the new week with falls of rain in places today bringing the increasing risk of localised flooding to parts it is set to change again midweek with the weather turning colder later Tuesday and lasting until the end of the week but there is some good news after the weekend.

On Tuesday evening up until Friday a colder air mass will move across Ireland with temperatures below average for the time of year with temperatures in the single figures.

On Wednesday night and Thursday morning a even colder sector of air will sweep across Ireland with upper air temperatures dropping as low as -5C to -6C upper air temperatures also known as 850hPa temperatures are around 1500 meters above sea level.

On Wednesday evening and night a band of precipitation looks set to move in of the Atlantic and is it moves west to east across Ireland it could wintry falls in places

As the band of precipitation move across Ireland on Wednesday night it will turn to sleet and snow in places with the highest risk areas over the hills and higher ground areas.

highest risk areas will be the northwest and north of Ireland particularly across parts of Donegal, Sligo Leitrim, Derry, Tyrone, Fermanagh and Antrim where some accumulations could occur between 1cm to 4cm but not all areas will see snowfall.

Latest accumulation chart below showing this risk from the ECMWF model.

The band if precipitation will clear through after midnight Wednesday with heavy wintry showers following behind moving in from the Atlantic increasing the risk of accumulations, Theses showers will also fall as sleet and hail in places with the risk of thunderstorm activity. highest risk areas will be across the north, northwest and west with the best of any drier weather across the south and east.

The biggest risk on Wednesday night and especially Thursday morning will be icy roads which could lead to very poor travel conditions with some black ice also possible. There will also be the additional hazard across the northwest and north of snow on the ground with some slushy conditions also possible.

Air Temperatures overnight will range between -1C to 3C colderst across Ulster. Ground temperatures will be below freezing for many areas on Thursday morning.

Snow and ice warnings are likely to be issued in the coming 24 hours. I will have another update on Tuesday on the risk.

Also stay tuned as there is some good news well from looking at the models anyways as the GFS and ECMWF models show a possible lengthy spell of drier and sunny weather from Sunday on and much of next week which will be a welcomed sign.
