BLACK ICE WARNING - Widespread hazardous driving conditions expected tonight & Friday morning

The cold snap is set to last another another two night across Ireland with freezing conditions again across much of Ireland overnight leading the icy roads. Overnight snow in parts of the midlands and east still has not thawed in places dur to temperatures staying around 0C in parts of Leinster today.

Temperatures will drop rather quickly this evening in many parts of Ireland temperatures at 4:45pm this afternoon are already between 0C to 2C across parts of Leinster, east Ulster and east Munster as can be seen below on the latest temperature charts. Temperatures tonight are forecast to fall between -4C to 0C

Showers across Ulster and Connacht today will leave many surfaces wet leading to very icy conditions on Thursday night and Friday morning. Road surface temperatures tonight will fall much lower than the air temperatures in places which will see water on any surfaces freeze rather quickly.

For a example you can also see the air temperatures below attached which shows the air temperatures around or just above freezing around some coastal areas of the west and northwest. Even with air temperatures between 0C to 4C black ice can form due to the colder surface temperatures.

Black ice and hazardous driving conditions across Donegal tonight and Friday morning

Another cold night again is also expected across Donegal with freezing temperatures for many places. There has been a number of showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow across parts of Donegal today leading to wet surface both on roads and footpaths which will become hazardous overnight and on Friday morning with ice forming on them. Temperatures across Donegal tonight will drop between 0C to -4C coldest across eastern and southern parts of Donegal

UK Met Office Weather Warning

Sleet and snow showers will push across Northern Ireland from the north during Thursday evening and overnight into Friday. These will leave surfaces wet with icy stretches readily forming. Some snow is expected to accumulate with some places seeing 1-2 cm of snow even to low levels though many sites will see little lying snow. Above 200 m a few sites could see 5 cm or so though ice remains the main hazard.
