Friday night and Saturday morning looks set to be the coldest winter night in years with lows of -10C

The current cold spell of weather could end with one of the coldest winters nights in years across Ireland with some of the forecasting models showing temperatures possibly dropping as low as -10C loacally in parts of Ireland on Saturday morning.

Met Eireanns Numerical Weather Prediction model called the HARMONIE model indicates temperatures in the midlands will reach as low as -10 locally which would make it the coldest night at least in 2 winters with the last temperature of this kind recorded at the end of February –9.7 °C reported at Durrow, Co Laois reported during Storm Emma when the beast from the east was effecting the island. ULSTER

Across Ulster temperatures are also forecast to fall as low as -1C to -8C coldest over mid and east Ulster. Over west and north Ulster temperatures will fall between 0C to -5C

CONNACHT

Across Connacht temperatures will range between 1C to -10C coldest across the eastern parts of the province where them extremes and very low temperatures will occur. Across the western parts of Ulster temperatures will range between 1C to-2C.

MUNSTER

A very cold night over Munster on Friday night and Saturday morning with it been the coldest night of winter so far for the province with lows of -3C to -9C. Coldest across the northern and eastern half of Munster

LEINSTER

Extremely cold across Leinster on Friday night and Saturday morning with it also be the coldest night of winter for the province with lows of -2 to -10C coldest across the west of Leinster with the extremes of -10C locally possible

very cold across Donegal of Friday night and Saturday morning again with the risk of ice

Another cold night on Friday and Saturday morning again is also expected across Donegal with freezing temperatures for many places. There will be icy conditions leading to hazardous driving conditions in Donegal with black ice possible due to wet surfaces. Air temperatures across Donegal will range between 0C to -5C coldest across west east and south Donegal.

A Low temperature/ice warning is expected to be issued again tomorrow morning for Friday night and Saturday morning. There is currently a warning in places for the island of Ireland for Tonight Thursday and Friday morning.

Already this week we have seen the coldest temperature of winter with a temperature at Met Eireanns weather station at Markree Castle, Co. Sligo of -6.3°C which was recorded on Wednesday morning. It also holds the record for the lowest temperature on record in Ireland of -19.1°C recorded at Markree Castle, Co. Sligo on the 16th January 1881.

UK Met Office Weather Warning

Sleet and snow showers will push across Northern Ireland from the north during Thursday evening and overnight into Friday. These will leave surfaces wet with icy stretches readily forming. Some snow is expected to accumulate with some places seeing 1-2 cm of snow even to low levels though many sites will see little lying snow. Above 200 m a few sites could see 5 cm or so though ice remains the main hazard.
