Black ice, widespread frost and foggy conditions tonight and Christmas morning

Tonight Christmas eve will turn cold nationwide with temperatures near freezing or below. Temperatures overnight and Christmas morning will drop as low as -3C in places with highs of 2C.

Overnight and Christmas morning a widespread frost will form in many areas with the risk of some icy roads.

Black ice could be a issue on some wet roads on Christmas morning so beware of slippery road conditions and never assume even when a road has been gritted that it is ice free.

Note even with air temperatures around 2C to 3C ground or surface temperatures can be much lower and below freezing allowing ice to form

Christmas morning will start of cold and frosty with foggy conditions to in places with fog lingering around some parts of Ulster until the later morning into the afternoon. The morning will also see some bright and Sunny spells although some places sunshine will be hazy.

Over the afternoon cloud will increase from the south with wet and windy weather moving into southern parts on Christmas night and extending northwards on St. Stephens morning.
