UPDATE - Sleet and snow for places on Wednesday morning with some accumulations possible

viewimage (1).png

Cold weather is now established itself across Ireland with a big change to the system and as mentioned over last week there would be days when snow looked possible due to areas of low pressure moving across the country mixing with colder air across Ireland.

Tonight with colder air placed over Ireland an area of low pressure located of the west coast of Ireland will move in of the Atlantic from the west moving southeastwards on Wednesday morning. As the area of low pressure moves west to east it will bring a spell of rain which will turn to sleet and snow across some parts of South Connacht, parts of Munster and south Leinster some small snow accumulations on lower ground areas are possible but.

Tuesday night and Wednesday morning will be cold with lows of -3C to +2C coldest across the west, north and east. Snow and ice warnings are currently in place for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Wexford, Wicklow, Offaly, Donegal, Antrim, Armagh, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry, Leitrim, Sligo, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford

CURRENT TEMPERATURES ACROSS IRELAND 10PM

Some parts of Ulster and Leinster will stay dry as the area of low pressure moves across Wednesday morning with precipitation across the south and southwest falling some of the precipitation may fall as rain or sleet also .

Higher ground areas across Ireland on Wednesday will become very hazardous and should be avoided.

SNOW ACROSS NORTH CONNACHT AND ULSTER WEDNESDAY MORNING

Some showers will also occur across north Connacht and north Ulster on Wednesday falling as hail and sleet sleet but turning increasingly to snow after midnight into Wednesday morning with some accumulations to lower level possible in any heavier showers . These showers are known as sea streamers which form over the sea due to the warmer temperatures of the sea water mixing with the colder air above forming showers and been pushed inland by a northerly wind.

As we move into the end of the week and over this weekend it will turn colder with sharp to severe frost night time frosts and lows on some nights of -4C in places with icy stretches. There are also signals that a more easterly airflow and a strong blocking pattern will develop in the Atlantic giving the risk of some even more colder. There will also be a further risk of wintry showers and possible areas of low pressure crossing over Ireland bringing the risk of snow to places as rain is turned to snow as it hits the cold air. I will have further updates on this at the end of the week.
