Residents in Surrey have reported a tornado ripping through homes and cars, and pulling down fences and trees.

The start of the weekend has seen the south of England battered by heavy rain and strong winds.

The Met Office has received reports of a tornado in the town of Chertsey, and crews from Surrey Fire and Rescue have also been sent to reports of a tornado tearing through Ottershaw.

More than 20 homes suffered damaged roofs and 10 cars were struck by falling tiles on one estate, where fences and trees were also brought down.

More than 100 flood warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency where flooding is expected, and an additional 256 flood alerts are also live, meaning flooding is possible.

Some two dozen firefighters were sent to the scene to help residents, according to SurreyLive.

The tornadoes came amid a severe weather warning for heavy rain across the South, causing major disruption for people hoping for a Christmas getaway.
