Met Eireann this evening have issued a weather advisory for cold weather and snow for parts of Ireland.

Weather Advisory for Ireland

Cold and wintry weather will develop from Sunday evening. Showers of hail, sleet and snow will occur in places. Snow showers most frequent in Ulster and Connacht and especially so on high ground.

WEATHER ADVISORY FOR IRELAND FOR POSSIBLE ICY CONDITIONS AND SNOW ACCUMULATIONS

On Sunday the 26th of January 2020 a colder plunge of polar maritime air moving down from Northern Canada and Greenland will move over Ireland and stay with us for the start of next week with the risk of colder weather.

Temperatures

Sea level temperatures will range between 2C to 7C by day but during any shower activity temperatures could drop between 1C to 2C during the day. Night time temperatures will range between -3C to 3C on Sunday night, Monday night and Tuesday night.

Precipitation

Some showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow will occur in places mainly across the west, northwest and north of Ireland where these will be heaviest. Any snowfall will mainly occur over the dark hours so from late evening, night and early morning hours.

Snow accumulations

Snow accumulations will also occur in places with the highest risk of snow accumulations across the west, northwest and north of Ireland and possibly some southwestern areas of Ireland also. Snow will be more common over higher ground areas and mountains with some accumulations of up to 10cm from Sunday night into Tuesday night but some accumulations also look likely to occur across lowland areas during dark hours when temperatures drop low enough giving some hazardous driving conditions.

Icy roads

Icy road conditions will also be possible nationwide on Sunday evening/night , Monday and Tuesday with rain, hail and sleet showers leading to ice forming on road surfaces especially over the upland areas.

Windchill

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday will also see a very cold wind chill factor of between -1C to -7C coldest at night.

Thunder & Lightning

Some showers will also be thundery on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday mainly across the west and north of Ireland with some thunderstorm activity.
